If there's a town in New Jersey built for Christmas, it's this one. Cape May MAC puts it best: for the holidays, the seaside town "is transformed into a Dickens village" of fragrant greens and twinkling gaslights. Picture painted Victorian porches wrapped in garland, candlelit windows, musicians and carolers on the tour route, and the Atlantic just beyond.
This guide to Christmas in Cape May, NJ, covers the 2026 season with only the events and dates the organizers themselves have published, from candlelight house tours and holiday trolleys to tree lightings, the parade and Congress Hall's Winter Wonderland. Where an organizer hasn't posted 2026 dates yet, I say so and link to them.
It's for couples planning a December weekend, families looking for Santa, and anyone who wants their holidays to look a little like an old Christmas card.
How I picked these
Every event below comes from the organizer's own website as of November 4, 2026: Cape May MAC, the Washington Street Mall, Congress Hall (Cape Resorts), Cape May Stage and others. I've listed dates exactly as published, and where tickets are needed I've linked to the organizer. Popular tours sell out, so book early.

Cape May MAC: candlelight tours, trolleys and the Physick Estate
Cape May MAC (Museums + Arts + Culture) is the heart of Christmas in Cape May. It has run Christmas tours since the 1970s, and it runs many of the season's tours and trolley rides.
Emlen Physick Estate

The 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May's only Victorian house museum, is MAC's home base and the starting point for much of the season. It kicks off with the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 21, 2026: MAC says Santa and his elves deck out the estate with thousands of lights, and the John Walter Community Band plays a free concert of holiday classics as Santa lights the tree.
Through the season, the house is decorated in true Victorian style. MAC runs an Emlen Physick Estate House Tour of the first and second floors of the 18-room mansion with stories of Victorian Christmas traditions, and an Evening Yuletide House Tour, a first-person living-history tour in which your guide plays a member of the Physick family in the early 1900s. Both include the Carriage House's "An Old-Fashioned Christmas" exhibit: a giant tree, model trains, family photos, a Department 56 Dickens Village collection and a spot to drop letters to Santa.
Christmas Candlelight House Tours. This is the big one, Cape May's longest-running Christmas tour and MAC's largest annual fundraiser, now in its 52nd year. On three Saturday nights, December 5, 12 and 19, 2026, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., you stroll the gaslit streets of the historic district and step inside homes, inns, B&Bs, churches and hotels decorated for the holidays. It's self-guided and centered in a three-quarter-square-mile area; MAC says most properties are within a 20-minute walk of one another, and an express shuttle runs from the Physick Estate to the farthest stops.
Each night has a different lineup. Properties posted for 2026 include the Mainstay Inn, the Mason Cottage, Angel of the Sea, the Bedford Inn, 931 Beach Guest House and the Emlen Physick Estate, along with historic churches including Historic Macedonia Baptist Church and the Episcopal Church of the Advent; the Queen Victoria is on December 12, and the Wilbraham Mansion on December 19. Pick up your map and wristband at the Physick Estate the day before or day of. New this year: dinner packages with the Washington Inn (a three-course dinner at 4 p.m. before the tour) on December 12 and 19.
MAC's tips are worth repeating: wear your most comfortable walking shoes and dress in layers.
Holiday Inns Tour. For a smaller version, this tour visits three or more festively decorated B&B inns and private homes. Properties posted include the Bedford Inn, Cape May Stage, the Colonial House, the Duke of Windsor, the J. Stratton Ware House and the Queen Victoria. Dates posted are December 1–3, 8–10 and 15–17. Pick up the tour handout and map at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth or the Physick Estate. It also has a Washington Inn dinner package option.
Lamplighter Christmas Walking Tour. A self-guided evening tour of decorated inns and homes plus the "Old-Fashioned Christmas" exhibit, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on December 4, 11, 18 and 26.
Holiday trolley rides
MAC's trolleys are a cozy way to see the lights, especially for kids and anyone who'd rather not walk in the cold. Check MAC's Christmas page for each ride's dates and times, which are set through its ticketing calendar:
- Holiday Lights Trolley Rides: Christmas music and the history of holiday traditions as you ride past Victorian homes decorated for the season. MAC notes trolleys are open-air and availability is limited, especially on weekends. Begins and ends at the Ocean Street trolley stop.
- Santa's Trolley Rides: Mrs. Claus leads songs and stories, and Santa joins the fun at the gazebo on the Physick Estate grounds. Begins and ends at the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street, with free parking.
- Spirited Cape May Christmas Trolley Ride: tales of Christmases past, ghostly holiday sightings at the Physick House, and the weird and risky games Victorians played at Christmas.
- All That Glitters Trolley Tour: New Year's history, superstitions and how Cape Island Victorians celebrated the turn of the century.
MAC also lists Breakfast with Santa at The Inn of Cape May (advance purchase required) and its year-round Historic District Trolley Tour and lighthouse climbs.
Classical Cape May. On December 26 at 4 p.m., MAC's free concert series hosts a Christmas hymn sing-along at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, at Franklin and Washington Streets.

The pedestrian-only Washington Street Mall is Cape May's town square, and in December it goes all-in on festive decor: brick paths, twinkling lights, garlands and shop windows full of gifts. Its slogan for the season is "It's cozy in the heart of Cape May." Here are the 2026 events it has posted:

Each holiday season, Congress Hall, which began as a boarding house in 1816, transforms into a Winter Wonderland. The hotel is decorated throughout, and the Grand Lawn fills with lights, a carousel and the Congress Hall Express, a train ride through what the hotel calls its North Pole. The Enchanted Vendor Village sells handmade gifts and festive treats, with spiced cider, hot chocolate, cookies, roasted chestnuts and holiday pie. The hotel also hosts a tree lighting on the Grand Lawn with its Festival Choir; the Washington Street Mall says that lighting typically follows the city's 7 p.m. lighting on December 4.
Congress Hall hasn't posted 2026 hours for the Winter Wonderland yet; dates are announced each fall on its Winter Wonderland page. It notes that train and carousel availability and hours change and that rides are weather-dependent.
For overnight guests, the hotel's published 2026 packages include A Cape May Christmas (December 24–28, 2026) with a buffet dinner in the Grand Ballroom, and the Glitter Ball New Year's Eve Getaway (December 30, 2026 to January 3, 2027) with live music, an open bar and dinner. Cape Resorts' glass Christmas ornaments, handmade in family-run factories in Poland, are sold at Tommy's Folly in the hotel.

Where to stay for Christmas
Staying at an inn that's on the tours is part of the fun. Many of the inns in my Cape May bed and breakfasts guide appear on MAC's 2026 holiday tours. Two worth knowing:
The Queen Victoria
Known for Four historic buildings and 31 rooms, with breakfast at eight and afternoon tea at four
102 Ocean Street, Cape May, NJ 08204
- Outdoor seating

The Queen Victoria, built in 1881 on Ocean Street, is on the December 12 Candlelight House Tour, the Holiday Inns Tour and the Lamplighter tour. Its daily British-style afternoon tea at four, taken by the fire, is about as Christmassy as a B&B gets, and the inn advertises a winter weekend with tastings and cocoa by the parlor fire. It has 31 rooms across four historic buildings, so it's a good bet for groups of friends booking together.
The Bedford Inn
Known for An 1883 Italianate 'mother-daughter' villa with two wraparound verandahs, a block from the sea
805 Stockton Ave, Cape May, NJ 08204

The village also hosts a Wassail Day to open its holiday season. 2026 dates haven't been posted yet; dates are announced each fall on the village's site. If you'd like to add a ferry ride to your Christmas weekend, Lewes, Delaware, has its own traditions. Historic Lewes's 53rd Annual Holiday House Tour and Market is on December 5, starting at 9:30 a.m., with eight decorated private homes and historic buildings. The Lightship Overfalls also has a special opening on the first Saturday in December, and the City of Lewes hosts a Winter Solstice Lantern Festival on December 21, 2026, where you make a lantern and join the parade. My Cape May-Lewes Ferry day trip guide covers how the crossing works.
Tips for Christmas in Cape May
- Book early. MAC recommends advance purchase for the Candlelight House Tours, and holiday trolleys have limited seats, especially on weekends.
- Dress for the cold. Many tours are on foot after dark, and MAC's Holiday Lights trolleys are open-air.
- Plan your Saturdays. December 5 is the first Saturday of the month, so it should bring the parade, plus the first candlelight tour and Lewes's house tour; December 19 has the last candlelight tour and the Merriest Mall.
- Reserve dinner. On tour nights, restaurants fill up; MAC's Washington Inn dinner packages are one way to lock in a table.
- Look further afield. For more holiday ideas around the state, see my guides to New Jersey Christmas lights and Christmas markets.
Getting there and parking
Cape May is at the southern end of the Garden State Parkway. From Delaware, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry lands in North Cape May. MAC notes free parking at the Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street, for Santa's Trolley Rides, and the Washington Street Mall's website has parking information for the Mall. In the historic district, park once and walk; that's how the candlelight tours are designed to be seen.

Questions people ask
When is the Cape May Christmas Candlelight House Tour in 2026?
Cape May MAC's 52nd annual Christmas Candlelight House Tours run on three Saturday nights: December 5, 12 and 19, 2026, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The self-guided walking tour visits decorated homes, inns, B&Bs, churches and hotels in the historic district. Ticket holders pick up a map and wristband at the Physick Estate the day before or the day of the tour, and advance purchase is highly recommended.
When is the Cape May Christmas parade?
The Washington Street Mall describes the West Cape May Community Christmas Parade as always held on the first Saturday in December. It steps off at 5 p.m. at the West Cape May Fire Hall and reaches the Mall area sometime after 5, along Perry Street and Carpenters Lane. Many Mall merchants keep extended hours that day.
When is the Cape May Christmas tree lighting in 2026?
There are several. Cape May MAC lights the tree at the Emlen Physick Estate on November 21, 2026, with Santa and a free performance by the John Walter Community Band. The Washington Street Mall lists Christmas Tree Lightings Night on Friday, December 4, 2026; the city's tree is lit at 7 p.m. in Rotary Park, and the Congress Hall tree lighting typically follows shortly after.
Is Cape May worth visiting at Christmas?
For many people it's the best time of year. Cape May MAC describes the town as transformed into a Dickens village, with garlands and twinkling gaslights. You can tour decorated Victorian homes by candlelight, ride a holiday-lights trolley, shop the Washington Street Mall and see Congress Hall's Winter Wonderland, without summer crowds. Book inns and tour tickets early for December weekends.
Does Congress Hall do a Winter Wonderland?
Yes. Each holiday season Congress Hall decorates the hotel and turns its Grand Lawn into a Winter Wonderland with lights, a carousel, the Congress Hall Express train and an Enchanted Vendor Village with spiced cider and roasted chestnuts. The hotel notes ride availability and hours are subject to change and weather-dependent, so check its website for this season's schedule.
