Best States to Visit: 15 Slow Trips, Starting Close to Home

The best states to visit for a slow, cozy trip: 15 picks with one signature itinerary each, from Cape May and Mystic to Acadia, Zion and the Olympic coast.

A quiet mountain road curving through autumn hills at golden hour — Best States to Visit

Quick picks

Every list of the best states to visit seems to start with the same jet-set picks and end with a vague "it depends." This one starts at our front door. New Jersey and its neighbors come first, because the best trip is often the one you can take next Friday. Then the map opens up to national parks, small towns and seasons that are worth a flight.

Each of these 15 states gets one signature slow trip. That means one place to base yourself, one thing to build the days around, and enough room left over for a long lunch. Think of it as a travel notebook of trips I'd plan and recommend, not a checklist to finish.

If you're short on time, the first five are all reachable from New Jersey without a plane. The rest are bigger trips, best saved for a week off.

How I picked these

I chose trips that reward slowness, like a scenic drive, a walkable historic district or a park with car-free paths. Every fact comes from the park's or state's own official pages, checked in November 2026. National park rules change often, so the reservation notes below give the 2026 dates as the National Park Service published them. Check again before you book anything.

Close to home: New Jersey and its neighbors

New Jersey: Cape May's Victorian streets

Yes, the list starts here, and not only because it's our home turf. The whole city of Cape May is a National Historic Landmark for its Victorian buildings, and it calls itself the nation's oldest seashore resort. It sits right at the southern tip of the state.

The signature slow trip is a long weekend with no car keys involved. You can bike or walk the historic district, tour the 1879 Emlen Physick Estate, a Stick Style house attributed to Frank Furness, and end each day on the beach. Our things to do in Cape May guide has the full plan, and Cape May bed and breakfasts covers the porches. For more of the state, see things to do in New Jersey and our NJ weekend getaways.

New York: the Hudson Valley estates

Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site

national historic site · Hyde Park

Known for Springwood, FDR's birthplace and home, and the nation's first presidential library.

4097 Albany Post Rd, Hyde Park, NY 12538

Checked against official sources Nov 2026

New York's state tourism site lists the Hudson Valley's big draws as the Walkway Over the Hudson, the Shawangunk Ridge and the Roosevelt, Rockefeller and Vanderbilt estates. It also names a string of river towns, including Rhinebeck, Hudson, Nyack, New Paltz and Tarrytown.

The trip I'd plan is a Hyde Park weekend. The Home of FDR National Historic Site is on Route 9, about 5 miles north of Poughkeepsie. The Park Service describes it as about a 1.5-hour drive from New York City. It includes Springwood, Roosevelt's birthplace and home, and the nation's first presidential library. Next door, the Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site has a Hudson River overlook and tiered formal gardens. Spend the night in Rhinebeck, which our weekend getaways from NYC guide covers.

Pennsylvania: the Delaware Water Gap

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area

national recreation area · Columbia

Known for Forty miles of the free-flowing Delaware River and the gap it cuts through the Kittatinny Ridge.

Kittatinny Point, Columbia, NJ 07832

Also in 30 Things to Do in New Jersey, Region by Region

Checked against official sources Nov 2026

The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is shared with New Jersey. It protects 40 miles of the Delaware River, which the Park Service calls the longest free-flowing river east of the Mississippi.

The Pennsylvania side is waterfall country. Dingmans Falls and Silver Thread Falls are both reached by an accessible boardwalk, and Fulmer Falls is nearby. On the Jersey side, Mount Tammany looks straight down at the river. A good slow version is two days on the PA side for waterfalls, and a morning hike on the NJ side on the way home. Our NJ hikes guide covers Mount Tammany, and the Poconos are right next door if you want a lodge.

Connecticut: Mystic on the river

Mystic Seaport Museum

maritime museum · Mystic

Known for A recreated 19th-century maritime village and home of the 1841 whaling ship Charles W. Morgan.

75 Greenmanville Ave, Mystic, CT 06355

More in Mystic · Also in Things to Do in Mystic, CT

Checked against official sources Nov 2026

Mystic dates to 1654 and sits on both banks of the Mystic River. A bascule bridge in the middle of the village lifts for boats. It was a shipbuilding center in the clipper-ship era, and that history is the heart of the trip.

Mystic Seaport Museum is a recreated 19th-century maritime village. Its star is the 1841 Charles W. Morgan whaling ship. Amtrak has a station right in the village, so this can be a car-free weekend from New York or North Jersey. Our things to do in Mystic guide covers the aquarium, the bridge and nearby Stonington. If you're going in autumn, pair it with Connecticut fall foliage.

Delaware: Lewes and Cape Henlopen

Cape Henlopen State Park

state park · Lewes

Known for 5,000-acre park where the bay meets the ocean, with beaches, trails, a nature center and Fort Miles

Lewes, DE 19958

Also in Cape May-Lewes Ferry Day Trip

Checked against official sources Nov 2026

Delaware is one ferry ride from Cape May, and that's half the fun. Cape Henlopen State Park sits in Lewes, where the bay meets the ocean. Fort Miles was built here during World War II, and its museum is inside Battery 519, an underground bunker.

The slow trip is on two wheels. A bike loop links the nature center, the beach, a WWII observation tower and the Fort Miles area. A trail along Gordons Pond leads out to a beach overlook. Our Cape May–Lewes Ferry day trip explains how to do it in a day, but Lewes deserves a night.

Maine: Acadia and Bar Harbor

Acadia National Park

national park · Bar Harbor

Known for A 27-mile Park Loop Road and 45 miles of carriage roads on the Maine coast.

Hulls Cove Visitor Center, Bar Harbor, ME

Checked against official sources Nov 2026

If you only take one big drive north, make it Acadia. The Park Loop Road runs 27 miles, including a one-way stretch out to Sand Beach. Acadia also has 45 miles of carriage roads, built for walking, biking and horses rather than cars.

Plan ahead for the summit. In 2026, vehicles needed a reservation for Cadillac Summit Road from May 20 to October 25, booked only on Recreation.gov. Thirty percent of slots open 90 days ahead and the rest two days ahead, both at 10 am Eastern. There are separate sunrise and daytime slots. You don't need one if you arrive on foot, by bike or by taxi.

The free Island Explorer shuttle usually runs from mid-June to mid-October, and you can leave your car at the Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton. It doesn't go to the summit. In winter, usually only the stretch from the entrance station to Otter Cliff Road stays open to cars.

Want a beach instead of a summit? York Beach sits at the southern tip of Maine, hours closer to home. See our guide to York Beach, Maine.

Vermont: fall in Woodstock

Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park

national historical park · Woodstock

Known for Carriage roads and the oldest continuously managed scientific forest in the United States.

Woodstock, VT 05091 (parking at Billings Farm & Museum)

Checked against official sources Nov 2026

Vermont is the fall trip. The state's official foliage guide says peak color usually runs from the last week of September through the first or second week of October. It moves north to south, and from the high ground down to the valleys. Vermont also publishes a weekly foliage report through the season.

Base yourself in Woodstock. Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park is half a mile north of the village, with parking at Billings Farm & Museum. It has more than 25 miles of carriage roads and trails, and its Mount Tom forest is the oldest continuously managed scientific forest in the United States, according to the Park Service. There's no entrance fee. The visitor center in the Carriage Barn is open from Memorial Day weekend through October 31, and services are limited from November through May. Some trail sections are closed November 2–20, 2026, for hazard-tree removal.

Massachusetts: Cape Cod National Seashore

Cape Cod National Seashore

national seashore · Eastham

Known for Forty miles of sandy beach and 11 hiking trails across six Outer Cape towns.

Salt Pond Visitor Center, 50 Nauset Road, Eastham, MA

Checked against official sources Nov 2026

President Kennedy signed the law creating the Cape Cod National Seashore on August 7, 1961. It covers about 43,600 acres across Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans and Chatham. The Park Service describes forty miles of sandy beach and 11 hiking trails.

My slow version is a shoulder-season week, starting from the Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham and working north toward Provincetown. Lifeguards are on duty from late June through Labor Day. Some visitor facilities close from November through April, so check before an off-season trip.

The South: long drives and old streets

Virginia: Skyline Drive in Shenandoah

Skyline Drive runs 105 miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge in Shenandoah National Park. The speed limit is mostly 35 mph, which makes slowness the whole point. No reservation is needed. The park is 75 miles from Washington, DC, and has 500 miles of trail.

There are four entrances: Front Royal at mile 0, Thornton Gap at 31.5, Swift Run Gap at 65.5 and Rockfish Gap at 104.6. Big Meadows sits around mile 51, roughly the middle, and makes a natural overnight stop. Weather can close the drive at any time, so check the park's road page before you set off.

North Carolina: the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville

The Blue Ridge Parkway picks up where Skyline Drive ends. It runs 469 miles from Milepost 0 near Waynesboro, Virginia, to Milepost 469 near Cherokee, North Carolina, linking Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains. The Park Service says it's designed for slow travel at 45 mph or less.

One caution for now. As of November 2026, the Park Service lists Mileposts 344.2 to 355.3, from NC 80 to Mount Mitchell State Park, as closed because of damage from Hurricane Helene. The stretches around Asheville, Mileposts 355.3 to 393.6, are open. Check the parkway's road closure page before you plan a route.

South Carolina: Charleston's historic district

Charleston is the slow-walk city of the South. On October 13, 1931, it became the first city in the country to adopt a zoning ordinance with a defined historic district. The city expanded the district in 1959, nearly tripling its size, and it was listed on the National Register in 1960.

A Charleston trip doesn't need an itinerary. Pick a guesthouse inside the old district, walk the streets in the morning, and leave the afternoons open. It's an easy match for anyone who loves Cape May's preserved streets.

The West: the big parks

Utah: Zion by shuttle

Zion National Park

national park · Springdale

Known for A free seasonal shuttle along Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, with no ticket or reservation needed.

Zion Canyon Visitor Center, Springdale, UT

Checked against official sources Nov 2026

Zion is the national park for people who'd rather not drive once they arrive. The Zion Canyon shuttle is free, and you don't need a ticket or reservation. While it runs, private cars can't use Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, except for Zion Lodge guests.

The shuttle usually runs daily from March through November, with a holiday stretch in late December. The current schedule shows no service from November 29 to December 25. The canyon line starts at the Zion Canyon Visitor Center, and a separate line serves the town of Springdale, so you can stay in town and leave the car parked all trip. Angels Landing needs a permit for the chains section from Scout Lookout up, through lotteries on Recreation.gov.

Arizona: the Grand Canyon's South Rim

Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim)

national park · Tusayan

Known for The year-round South Rim, with shuttle buses included with park entry.

Grand Canyon Visitor Center, South Rim, AZ

Checked against official sources Nov 2026

The South Rim is open all year. Its South Entrance is 6 miles north of Tusayan. The Park Service puts it at about an hour from Williams, about 90 minutes from Flagstaff and about four hours from Phoenix. Grand Canyon Railway trains arrive daily at the South Rim depot.

Once you're there, the shuttle buses come with park entry. Hermit Road runs about 7 miles along the rim and is closed to private cars from March 1 to November 30, when the Red Route bus serves it. That makes the slow trip simple: a rim walk at sunrise, a shuttle west in the afternoon, and a second night so you see the canyon in both lights.

California: Yosemite without a reservation

Good news for 2026: Yosemite has no timed-entry reservation system this year. The park is managing traffic and parking instead. You can even arrive without a car by taking Amtrak to Merced and then the YARTS bus into the park. The Yosemite Valley shuttle is free.

The trip I'd plan is three days in the valley on foot and by shuttle. In fall and winter, roads in the high country close. As of October 30, 2026, Tioga Road and Glacier Point Road were closed for snow, so a late-season trip is a valley trip.

Coming from the coast instead? Our Solvang bakeries guide covers Olsen's Danish Village Bakery and the town's other Danish bakeries, and our coffee shops in San Jose guide is the place to start a Bay Area stop.

Washington: the Olympic Peninsula

Olympic National Park

national park · Port Angeles

Known for Nearly a million acres of glacier-capped mountains, temperate rainforest and wild coast.

3002 Mount Angeles Rd, Port Angeles, WA

Checked against official sources Nov 2026

Olympic National Park packs three trips into one. It covers nearly a million acres, with glacier-capped mountains, old-growth temperate rainforest and more than 70 miles of coastline. The main visitor center is in Port Angeles.

From there, the Hoh Rain Forest is about two hours' drive. It gets about 140 inches of precipitation a year, and the Hall of Mosses loop is just 0.8 miles, so it works as a gentle walk. The Hoh visitor center is closed from January to early March. Plan a slow loop of the peninsula over four or five nights, with the coast on one side and the mountains on the other.

If you fly into Seattle, give yourself a morning on the University of Washington campus for the Suzzallo Library reading room before you head for the peninsula.

A few more trips I'd plan, each with its own guide:

Picking your state by season

  • Spring: Charleston's historic district and Shenandoah's Skyline Drive, before the summer heat.
  • Summer: Acadia, the Cape Cod National Seashore and the Jersey Shore. Book Acadia's summit road early.
  • Fall: Vermont, the Connecticut hills and the Hudson Valley. Watch the official foliage reports rather than guessing at peak dates.
  • Winter: Zion's shuttle-free months, the Grand Canyon's South Rim, which is open year-round, and Cape May at Christmas. See Cape May at Christmas.

A few planning notes

  • Check the park page twice. Once when you book, once the week you go. Reservation windows, road closures and shuttle dates change every year.
  • Start with the gateway town. Rooms in Bar Harbor, Springdale and Woodstock fill fast in peak season. Lock in a bed before you plan the days.
  • Pair a big trip with a small one. A week out West feels better with a quiet weekend at home before or after. Our day trips from NYC and romantic getaways are good places to look.

Questions people ask

What is the best state to visit in the USA?

There's no single winner, because it depends on the trip you want. For a slow coastal weekend near New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are hard to beat. For a big national park trip, Utah, Arizona and Maine are classics. Vermont is the pick for fall color, and Washington is the pick for rainforest and wild coast in one week.

What are the best vacation destinations in the USA for a first trip?

For first-timers, pick one place you can explore slowly rather than five you rush. Good anchors include Acadia National Park in Maine, the Grand Canyon's South Rim in Arizona, Zion in Utah, Charleston's historic district in South Carolina and Shenandoah's Skyline Drive in Virginia. Each has a clear gateway town and a route you can follow without much planning.

Which states can I visit from New Jersey without flying?

Pennsylvania, New York, Connecticut and Delaware are all an easy drive, and some are reachable by train. Amtrak stops in Mystic, Connecticut, and the Cape May–Lewes Ferry links New Jersey to Delaware. Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts and Virginia work well as longer road trips. For a fly-in trip, Yosemite can be reached by Amtrak to Merced and then the YARTS bus.

Do I need reservations to visit national parks in 2026?

Some parks require them in season and others don't. Acadia required vehicle reservations for Cadillac Summit Road from May 20 to October 25, 2026, and Rocky Mountain used timed entry from late May to mid-October. Zion's shuttle needs no ticket. Yosemite has no timed-entry system in 2026. Always check the park's own nps.gov page before you go.

When is the best time to visit the Northeast states?

Late September and October are the classic window. Vermont's official foliage guide says peak color usually runs from the last week of September through the first or second week of October, moving from north to south and from high ground down to the valleys. Summer suits the Jersey Shore, Cape Cod and Maine's coast, and early December brings holiday lights to towns like Cape May and Mystic.
