Morristown has the kind of downtown that makes you want to slow your steps. There's the Green in the middle, the church spires, the brick storefronts on South Street, and, a short drive away, the winter hills where Washington's army waited out 1779 and 1780. It's an old town that wears its history lightly, and it happens to have a very good coffee scene for its size.
This guide to the best coffee shops in Morristown, NJ, is for the slow-weekend crowd: you've come in on the train from the city, or you've driven over from somewhere in North Jersey, and you want a warm cup, a pastry and a window seat before you wander. It's also for locals who want a new place to try on a Saturday.
Most of these cafés sit within a ten-minute walk of each other, so you can absolutely have a two-coffee morning. I won't judge.
How I picked these
These picks come from research, not from years of loyalty cards: each café's own website and menu, Morris County Tourism's 2026 coffee roundup, and local news. Every place here was confirmed open in 2025–2026. I aimed for a mix of styles (a market-style coffee bar, a design-minded café, a farm-to-cup roaster, a bakery and a nonprofit) plus two independent spots in nearby Boonton for anyone with a car and an extra hour.
Around the Green and South Street
South Street runs from the Green toward the Mayo Performing Arts Center, and it's where Morristown's café life is busiest. Three of the picks are on this stretch.
General Coffee Co.
Known for A specialty coffee bar and small market with sustainable coffee, chef-prepared meals and snacks.
21 South St, Morristown, NJ 07960
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
General Coffee Co. is at 21 South Street, about as close to the Green as you can get without sitting on a bench. It describes itself in four short words, "Market. Sustainable Coffee. Chef Prepared Meals. Snacks.", and that mix is the point. Morris County Tourism calls it a specialty coffee bar with a modern general-store feel, with cold brew on tap and chef-prepared food that turns a quick coffee run into brunch.
That makes it a good first stop on a day in town. You can pick up a coffee and something to eat, then carry them across to the Green, or grab snacks for a drive out to Jockey Hollow later. The café also takes event bookings and online orders through its website.
Who'll love it: anyone who wants coffee and an actual meal without a second stop, and people who like a café that doubles as a small market. Nearby: the Green, the shops along South Street and Park Place, and the historic churches around the square.
LOKL Café
Known for A café built on the idea that great coffee can slow the world down, serving hand-crafted drinks from direct-trade beans.
80 South St, Morristown, NJ 07960
- Outdoor seating
- Dog-friendly

LOKL Café, at 80 South Street, has the most fully worked-out philosophy of any café in town. Its own words: it was created on the belief that "great coffee can build trust, inspire connection, and slow the world down for a moment." The beans are direct trade, sourced from farmers in Colombia, El Salvador, Panama, Ethiopia and Costa Rica, and each cup is made by hand.
The detail I love is its "Analog Life" project. LOKL invites guests to write by hand, shoot on film and savor the moment, and pens, notebooks and cameras sit around the café alongside the espresso cups. LOKL has also opened a second café in SoHo, in New York City, so Morristown's version has a big-city sibling.
Morris County Tourism says LOKL is known for its chocolate croissants and its Sunrise Morristown egg sandwich, has outdoor seating in good weather, and is dog-friendly. My pick for a rainy morning with a journal is here.
Who'll love it: writers, journal-keepers, film photographers and anyone who wants permission to linger. Nearby: Roast Coffee House is practically next door, and the Green is a short walk up South Street.
Roast Coffee House
Known for A specialty coffee house designed with 'elevated warmth and sophistication' in the former SmartWorld Coffee space.
74 South St, Morristown, NJ 07960
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
Roast Coffee House is the newest name on South Street, at number 74. It opened in the space that was once SmartWorld Coffee, and it calls itself "elevated. curated. timeless." The café says it was designed with "an elevated warmth and sophistication in mind," an upscale room meant to give Morristown's coffee culture a new look while still feeling like "a home away from home."
Roast is clear about what it's going for: coffee as "culture and community," good people and good coffee, one cup at a time. It sells its own merch and gift cards online and is active on Instagram and TikTok, so that's the place to check for seasonal drinks and news.
Who'll love it: anyone who likes a polished, design-forward café, and people meeting a friend for a long catch-up. Nearby: LOKL is a few doors away, and it's a short walk to the Mayo Performing Arts Center if you're making a matinee day of it.

Along Morris Street, toward the train
Morris Street runs east from the Green to the NJ Transit station. If you're arriving by train, these two are your welcome committee.
Rey Sol Coffee Roasters
Known for 100% single-origin Colombian coffee grown on the family's own farm in Risaralda and roasted in the café, with pastries, brunch and lunch.
140 Morris St, Morristown, NJ 07960
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
Rey Sol Coffee Roasters, at 140 Morris Street, is the place for anyone who wants to know exactly where their coffee came from. The Ramirez family grows every bean it roasts on its farm in Balboa, in the Risaralda region of Colombia, and the coffee is 100% single-origin, microlot Colombian. The family says it has farmed this way for five generations, with old-world touches such as honeybees, free-range chickens and citrus trees on the farm.
In New Jersey, the beans are roasted fresh in the café three times a week. Alongside the coffee, Rey Sol serves fresh-baked pastries plus brunch, lunch and dessert, and it sells beans and merch online. There's a second café in Ridgewood, too.
The family talks about its Morristown café as the start of a legacy here, and it's hard not to root for that.
Who'll love it: coffee nerds, anyone curious about Colombian coffee, and brunchers who want the beans and the plate to share a story. Nearby: the train station is down the street, and Tatte is a short walk back toward the Green.
Tatte Bakery & Café
Known for A bakery-café moments from the train station serving pastries, brunch and lunch dishes and signature coffee.
100 Morris St, Morristown, NJ 07960
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
Tatte Bakery & Café is a regional bakery-café brand, and its Morristown location is at 100 Morris Street. Tatte describes this café as "only moments from the train station," a short trip from the Morristown Green and within walking distance of shopping. On the menu: pastries, brunch and lunch dishes and Tatte's signature coffee.
It's not a tiny independent like the others here, and I've included it anyway for a simple reason. If you're stepping off the train and want a pastry case, a full plate and a coffee in one place before you walk into town, the location is hard to beat. Tatte also has a café in Ridgewood if you're making a North Jersey loop.
Who'll love it: train arrivals, pastry people and anyone hosting a brunch meetup. Nearby: Rey Sol is a block or so east, and the Green is a few minutes' walk west.
North of the Green, on Speedwell Avenue
Ethan & the Bean
Known for A nonprofit café working to increase employment for people with autism and intellectual disabilities. 'Hope is always brewing.'
70 Speedwell Ave, Morristown, NJ 07960
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
Ethan & the Bean is a nonprofit café with a mission it states plainly: "to increase the employment rate for persons with Autism & Intellectual Disabilities." Its coffee shops are designed as positive, empowering places where people build hospitality skills through hands-on training and what it calls competitive integrated employment, meaning they get the same benefits as other employees in similar roles. The motto is "Hope is always brewing."
The Morristown café is at 70 Speedwell Avenue, a short walk north of the Green, and there's a second café in Little Falls. The Morristown café is set up for weekday visits, so check the café's hours on its site before planning a weekend stop. Ethan & the Bean also ships its coffee anywhere in the US, runs a coffee club, and sells wedding and party favors, which is a lovely way to bring the mission home.
Who'll love it: anyone who likes their coffee money to do some good, and weekday workers near Speedwell Avenue. Nearby: the Green is a short walk south.

Worth the short drive: Boonton
If you've got a car and a free hour, Boonton is a short drive north of Morristown (roughly eight miles). Its historic Main Street is lined with independent shops, and it has two coffee places a few doors apart. Both are featured in Morris County Tourism's 2026 coffee guide.
Boonton Coffee Co.
Known for A small-batch specialty roaster and cozy Main Street coffee shop with a seasonal, ever-changing bean selection.
602 Main St, Boonton, NJ 07005
Also in The Best Coffee Shops in NJ
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
Boonton Coffee Co., at 602 Main Street, is a small-batch specialty roaster and coffee shop. It describes its shop as the place where it roasts its own beans and serves "fresh, flavorful coffee," and as a spot where people "come to relax, catch up with friends, or just enjoy the quiet charm of the town."
The roasting philosophy is laid out simply. Smaller batches give more control over temperature and develop more complex flavors. There are "no warehouses, no middleman," and the selection changes with the coffee harvest, so no bean sticks around for more than a few months. Boonton Coffee also hosts live events (check its events page) and runs a subscription for home brewers. It has done collaborations with local causes too, including a limited blend supporting NorthStar Pet Rescue.
Who'll love it: anyone who likes a true neighborhood roaster, and people who want to bring a bag of beans home. Nearby: the rest of Boonton's Main Street, a few steps from Catfight.
Catfight Coffee
Known for A Boonton coffee shop and online roastery known for licensed rock and horror coffees and seasonal flavored blends.
616 Main St, Boonton, NJ 07005
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
Catfight Coffee is the wild card of this guide, and I mean that fondly. The shop at 616 Main Street in Boonton sits alongside an online roastery with a big personality. It sells officially licensed coffees with rock and horror partners, including an Alice Cooper single-origin Burundi, a Mastodon Sumatra and a Misfits roast. It also does seasonal flavored coffees such as black pumpkin and egg nog, and recently marked its two-year anniversary with a Colombian–Brazilian blend.
If you like your latte with a little attitude, this is the stop. It's also a fun place to buy a gift for the music fan who already owns every band T-shirt.
Who'll love it: horror fans, metal fans, flavored-coffee people and anyone who finds third-wave cafés a bit too serious. Nearby: Boonton Coffee Co. is a few doors down Main Street, so you can compare.

Parking, trains and when to go
By train: Morristown is on NJ Transit's Morristown Line, with service toward Hoboken and New York Penn Station. The station is on Morris Street, a short walk east of the Green. That puts Tatte and Rey Sol on your way into town, and the South Street cafés are only a few minutes farther. Check NJ Transit for current schedules.
By car: Downtown Morristown has metered street parking and public garages run by the Morristown Parking Authority. Weekends near the Green get busy, especially on event days, so a garage is often the calmer choice. Boonton's Main Street has its own street parking.
When to go: Weekday mornings are for commuters. Saturday and Sunday late mornings are when the brunch-minded cafés fill up, so aim early or after 1 p.m. Fall is the prettiest season, with leaves on the Green and cool air for walking. It's also the best time to pair your coffee with a walk at Morristown National Historical Park, the country's first national historical park, including Jockey Hollow and Washington's Headquarters at the Ford Mansion.
For a bigger trip, see my statewide guide to the best coffee shops in NJ. If you're building a slow weekend around coffee, Montclair's cafés are about a half-hour east, and my weekend getaways guide has more ideas.
