There is a particular kind of cold that only makes sense at a Christmas market. Your fingers ache, your nose is pink, and you are holding a paper cup of something hot like it's the most precious object in Sussex County. Around you, wooden huts glow. Somebody is singing in German. You came for one ornament and you are now holding a nutcracker, a bag of roasted almonds and a strong opinion about bratwurst.
New Jersey does this better than people expect. The best-known Christmas market in NJ is the German Christmas Market that grew up in Sparta, but the state also has proper Christmas villages, a heated outdoor market at a 19th-century mill, a brand-new night market in a colonial downtown, and a juried makers' market outside a concert hall in Newark. Most of them happen on one or two weekends, so the trick is knowing the dates.
This guide is for the planner: the person who wants to circle a weekend in December, wear the good scarf, and come home with gifts nobody else will have. Every date below is the 2026 date as each organiser has published it.
How I picked these
Every market and village here has its 2026 dates posted by the people who run it, and each listing links straight to them. I looked for a mix: one big German market, a few Christmas villages for families, small-town evening markets, and one city option for anyone coming in by train. Church bazaars and one-day craft fairs are lovely, but they change every year, so they're not on this list. Plans shift, so check the organiser's page the week you go.
The German Christmas Market (the one everyone means by "Sparta")
German Christmas Market of New Jersey
Known for A nonprofit, volunteer-run German Christmas market founded in 2001: wooden huts, German food, imported wooden decorations and live choirs. 2026 (25th market): Dec 4–6.
Sussex County Fairgrounds, 37 Plains Rd, Augusta, NJ 07822
- free parking
- wheelchair accessible
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
If you've searched for the German Christmas market in Sparta, NJ, this is the one. The German Christmas Market of New Jersey was founded in 2001 by Karin Meyer and Gudrun Rank, who wanted to share the holiday traditions of their heritage with the Sparta community. For years it was a fixture by Lake Mohawk. In 2021 it outgrew that home and moved to the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta, north of Sparta off Route 206. The mailing address is still a Sparta PO box, which is why the old name sticks.
2026 is its 25th market, and it runs one weekend only: Friday, December 4 and Saturday, December 5, 10 AM–8 PM, and Sunday, December 6, 10 AM–5 PM. The organisers describe wooden huts, bratwurst and other German food, hand-crafted gifts, live choirs and wooden decorations imported from Germany: nutcrackers, incense smokers, ornaments and Christmas pyramids. For families there's a petting zoo with pony rides, a carousel, sleigh rides, Santa's gazebo in the courtyard and a model train display in the greenhouse. The entertainment schedule for 2026 is due on the site in early November.
Admission per the market's site is $10 for ages 13 and up, $7 for seniors 65 and over, and free for veterans with ID and children 12 and under, with tickets sold online. Parking at the fairgrounds is free, with shuttles from overflow lots at peak times. It's a nonprofit: the market says it has given more than $930,000 to local charities since 2001.
Who'll love it: anyone who has stood in a Christkindlmarkt in Europe and missed it ever since. The market counts around 30,000 visitors over its three days, so arriving close to opening is a gentle kindness to yourself.
Skylands Stadium Light Show & Christmas Village
Known for A mile-long drive-through light show with over two million lights plus a free-entry Christmas Village with vendors, a light tunnel and Santa. 2026: select dates Nov 21–Dec 30.

- free parking
- wheelchair accessible

Make a full Sussex County night of it. Skylands Stadium, home of the Sussex County Miners baseball team, is less than a mile from the fairgrounds, and from November 21 to December 30, 2026 (select dates) it runs a mile-long drive-through light show the stadium says has more than two million lights. The ticketed part is the drive, sold online by the carload in timed slots. The part that belongs in this guide is the Christmas Village beside it, which the stadium says needs no ticket to enter.
Inside the village you'll find holiday vendors, a walk-through light tunnel, s'mores at a fire pit, hot cocoa and coffee, and a winter beer garden for the grown-ups, with Santa visits on a schedule the stadium posts closer to the season. Food, Santa photos and some extras cost money; parking is free. The stadium suggests planning at least two hours if you do both the drive and the village.
Pair it with the German market on Friday, December 4 or Saturday, December 5: huts and choirs by day, lights after dark, without changing towns. For more drive-throughs around the state, see my guide to Christmas lights in NJ.

Christmas villages in NJ
A Christmas market is a place to shop. A Christmas village is a place to wander, ideally while someone small holds your hand and points at everything. New Jersey has three very different ones.
Historic Smithville
Known for A village of about 50 shops on cobblestone walkways that grew from a one-room stagecoach stop; free Light Show on the Lake nightly Nov 26, 2026–Jan 6, 2027.
615 E Moss Mill Rd, Smithville (Galloway Township), NJ 08205
- free parking
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
Historic Smithville, in Galloway Township just outside Atlantic City, is the closest thing New Jersey has to a storybook village you can actually walk into. It began, in the village's own words, as a simple one-room stagecoach stop and has grown over the last 50 years into a cluster of about 50 owner-run shops on cobblestone walkways and little footbridges. In December, the whole place leans into it.
The centrepiece is the Light Show on the Lake, nightly from November 26, 2026 to January 6, 2027, 5:30–8:30 PM. More than 120 Christmas trees, lit with over 50,000 lights, float on Lake Meone and dance to holiday music. You can watch from either side of the village or from the bridge, and admission and parking are free.
The 2026 calendar has a few more evenings worth planning around. Dickens Fest, a musical, outdoor A Christmas Carol by Riddlesbrood Touring Theatre with holiday vendors around the village, runs Saturday, November 28 (1 PM and 6 PM) and Sunday, November 29 (1 PM), also free. Hospitality Night on Saturday, December 5, 6–9 PM is the shops' thank-you evening, with raffles, discounts, refreshments, s'mores by the green and a choir in the gazebo at 6 PM. The village's December page also lists a Magic Talking Tree on weekends, s'mores on the green Friday through Sunday evenings, and a small holiday train ride, weather permitting.
Who'll love it: families, couples, anyone who likes their Christmas a little Victorian. GPS tip from the village itself: it won't recognise "Smithville", so enter 615 E. Moss Mill Road and choose Absecon or Galloway.
The Village at Anne Ellen
Known for A walk-through Christmas village reached by hayride at a cut-your-own tree farm; select nights Nov 6–Dec 30, 2026, tickets online only.
Anne Ellen Christmas Tree Farm, 114 Daum Rd, Manalapan, NJ 07726
Also in Christmas Lights in NJ
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
The Village at Anne Ellen is a different animal. By day, Anne Ellen is a cut-your-own Christmas tree farm in Manalapan with three shops: a Red Barn of décor and gifts, an Ornament Shop (with a Made in America section), and a Donut Shop. After dark, the farm runs a hayride through the tree fields to The Village, a walk-through Christmas village of lit-up houses, a Gingerbread House, a Candy Cane Factory, an Ice Castle, a Yeti Tunnel, a Kissing Bridge, Santa's House and gift shops along the way.
For 2026 it runs select nights from November 6 to December 30, from 5 PM. New this year is The Village Greene, an add-on area with Christmas mini golf, a lighted maze, a giant snowglobe, interactive light-up drums and a big firepit; it's $5 more per ticket. Santa is in The Village every night through Christmas Eve.
The important bit: Village tickets are online only, with none sold at the door, and the farm says weekends usually sell out. Entry is by timed slot. Leashed dogs are welcome on the farm by day but can't come into The Village. Who'll love it: families with kids young enough to believe in yetis, and anyone who wants a tree and a light walk on the same trip.
The Skylands Stadium Christmas Village (above) is the third, and the only one of the three that's free to walk into.

Small-town holiday markets
These are the markets you build a Saturday around: a historic downtown or a museum village, some shopping, some cocoa, home before the roads get dark.
Red Mill Museum Village (Winter Village & Festival of Trees)
Known for A 10-acre museum village around the 1810 Red Mill; its 17th annual Festival of Trees opens with a heated outdoor Winter Village of 50+ craft artisans. 2026 Winter Village: Nov 27–29, Dec 5–6.
56 Main St, Clinton, NJ 08809
- Dog-friendly
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
The Red Mill in Clinton is the one on every Hunterdon County calendar, and the photos of it are half the reason people come. The museum is built around an 1810 red mill on 10 acres with a quarry, a schoolhouse, a log cabin and a working blacksmith shop.
For the holidays, the museum's 17th annual Festival of Trees opens alongside the Winter Village, run with Marketspace Vendor Events: five days of shopping in a heated outdoor market with 50-plus local craft artisans, demonstrations and activities, plus food trucks, craft beer and mulled wine. Winter Village days for 2026 are November 27–29 and December 5–6, 10 AM–6 PM. The Festival of Trees continues December 11–13 and 18–20, with Santa there each day of the festival, and a new Luminary Night on Saturday, December 12 (rain date December 19), when the museum stays open later among hundreds of luminaries.
Admission is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and under and current members, at the door or online. And the museum states the Winter Village is dog-friendly for well-behaved pups, which is rarer than it should be.
Who'll love it: makers, photographers, and anyone whose ideal December afternoon ends with a wander down a small-town Main Street. The museum's address is 56 Main Street, so Clinton's downtown is right there.
Yule Night Market
Known for The Partnership for Haddonfield's inaugural Yule-inspired night market with 50+ vendors and artists on Kings Highway, Fri Dec 4, 2026, 4–9 PM.
Kings Highway East & Kings Court, Haddonfield, NJ 08033
- free parking
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
Historic Downtown Haddonfield, strung along Kings Highway, is one of South Jersey's classic shopping streets, and in 2026 it adds something new: the inaugural Yule Night Market on Friday, December 4, 4–9 PM. The Partnership for Haddonfield describes Kings Highway and Kings Court turning into a winter marketplace inspired by old Yule traditions, with illuminated holiday trees and more than 50 vendors and artists selling handcrafted goods, artwork, jewelry, home décor and specialty foods.
It's one night only, which makes it feel like an occasion. The rest of the season is easy to plan around too. Candlelight Shopping runs every Friday evening from November 27 to December 18, with merchants open until 8 PM or later, and the season kicks off with a tree lighting at 6 PM on November 27 followed by a Santa parade to the Kings Court gazebo. The town says downtown parking is free from Thanksgiving through January 3, 2027.
Who'll love it: Philadelphia friends (it's a short PATCO ride from Center City to Haddonfield station) and anyone who'd rather shop after dark with a hot drink than fight a mall on a Saturday.
Christmas Festival at the Morristown Green
Known for Morristown Partnership's free holiday festival with family activities, entertainment and Santa on December weekends; 2026 starts with Santa's arrival and the Green lighting on Nov 28.
Morristown Green, Morristown, NJ 07960
More in Morristown
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
Morristown's Christmas season is less a market than a festival, but it's the reason a lot of North Jersey families come downtown in December. The Morristown Partnership runs Santa's Arrival and the Lighting of the Morristown Green on Saturday, November 28, 2026, then the Christmas Festival at the Morristown Green on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays: November 29, December 4–6, 11–13 and 18–20.
The Partnership says the festival brings family activities, entertainment and Santa visits, and that everything is free except a $15 fee for photos with Santa. The 2026 schedule of activities is being posted on a rolling basis, so check the day's page before you go; the closing Sunday, December 20, is listed from noon to 7 PM.
The Green is ringed by shops, restaurants and cafés, so this works as a gift-shopping day with a festival in the middle. Who'll love it: families, and anyone who wants Christmas within walking distance of a train. Before you go, browse my Morristown coffee shops for a warm-up stop.
A city market: Newark
NJPAC Holiday Market
Known for NJPAC's inaugural juried holiday market of local makers and one-of-a-kind goods, Thursdays–Sundays Dec 10–20, 2026.
Chambers Plaza, NJPAC, 1 Center St, Newark, NJ 07102
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
New for 2026, the New Jersey Performing Arts Center is hosting its first NJPAC Holiday Market on Chambers Plaza, outside the arts center at 1 Center Street. It runs Thursdays through Sundays, December 10–20, noon–8 PM (closing at 6 PM on Sundays).
NJPAC describes it as a juried market. The selection committee gives special consideration to local makers and to one-of-a-kind, bespoke items you can't find just anywhere, and keeps a balanced mix of categories. Vendors will be announced in late November, so you'll know who's coming before you go.
Who'll love it: New Yorkers and anyone coming by train, and anyone who wants to tie shopping to a holiday show inside NJPAC. It's also part of a bigger season: the Newark Alliance lists a Newark Winter Village from November 21, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with the location still to be announced on its site.

Make a weekend of it
The 2026 calendar lines up beautifully on December 4–6. That one weekend has the German Christmas Market and Skylands in Sussex County, the Red Mill's last Winter Village days in Clinton, Haddonfield's Yule Night Market, Hospitality Night in Smithville and the Morristown festival. Pick a region and stay over:
- North: German market Friday, Skylands village after dark, Red Mill on Saturday morning on the drive home.
- South: Haddonfield's Yule Night Market on Friday night, then down to Smithville for Hospitality Night on Saturday, and on to Christmas in Cape May on Sunday for Victorian houses dressed for the season.
- Central: The Village at Anne Ellen at night (book ahead), Princeton's shops by day. Palmer Square's annual tree lighting is on November 27 from 5 to 6 PM, and my Princeton things to do guide fills in the rest.
More ideas for where to sleep are in my weekend getaways guide.
When to go and getting there
Timing. Thanksgiving weekend through the third weekend of December is the market season. The single-weekend markets (the German market and Haddonfield's Yule Night Market) are the ones to plan around. Villages like Smithville and Anne Ellen run most of the season, so they're the easy fallback for a free evening.
Driving. The German market's directions: from I-80 West take Exit 34B for Route 15 North toward Sparta, continue about 18 miles, merge onto US-206 North, then turn right onto Plains Road. Smithville is off Route 9 near Garden State Parkway Exits 48 (southbound) and 44 (northbound). The Red Mill is at 56 Main Street in Clinton, near I-78.
Trains. Morristown is on NJ Transit's Morristown Line, and the Green is a short walk from the station. NJPAC is in downtown Newark, reachable from Newark Penn Station. Haddonfield is on the PATCO line from Philadelphia.
Pack for it. Most of these markets are outdoors or partly outdoors in December. Warm boots, a tote bag and a little cash are always a good idea. Tickets for the German market, Skylands and Anne Ellen are sold online, and Anne Ellen sells none at the door.
Dogs. Only the Red Mill's Winter Village says dogs are welcome. The German market and Skylands allow service animals only, and Anne Ellen keeps dogs out of The Village.

Questions people ask
Is the German Christmas Market still in Sparta, NJ?
Not quite. The German Christmas Market of New Jersey was founded in 2001 to share German holiday traditions with the Sparta community, and its mailing address is still in Sparta. Since 2021 it has been held at the Sussex County Fairgrounds, 37 Plains Road in Augusta, a short drive north up Route 15 and Route 206. The 2026 market runs December 4–6.
What is the biggest Christmas market in New Jersey?
The German Christmas Market of New Jersey describes itself as the largest annual Christmas market in the state, and says it draws about 30,000 visitors a year. It runs for one weekend only, because it is staffed entirely by volunteers. In 2026 that weekend is Friday, December 4 to Sunday, December 6 at the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta.
Is there a Christmas village in New Jersey?
Several. Historic Smithville in Galloway Township is a year-round village of around 50 shops that dresses up for December and runs a free light show on its lake. The Village at Anne Ellen in Manalapan is a ticketed, walk-through Christmas village reached by hayride. Skylands Stadium in Augusta adds a free-entry Christmas Village beside its drive-through light show.
Are Christmas markets in NJ free?
Some are, some aren't. Haddonfield's Yule Night Market, Historic Smithville's light show and Skylands Stadium's Christmas Village are free to enter. The German Christmas Market and the Red Mill's Winter Village charge a modest admission, with children 12 and under free at both. The Village at Anne Ellen is ticketed online only, with nothing sold at the door.
When do Christmas markets start in New Jersey?
Most open the weekend after Thanksgiving. In 2026 the Red Mill's Winter Village opens November 27, Morristown's Christmas Festival begins with Santa's arrival on November 28, and Smithville's Dickens Fest runs November 28–29. The big German market waits until December 4–6, and NJPAC's market runs December 10–20.
