Mystic feels like a village that kept its boats. Sailboats tie up along the river, a steel drawbridge lifts in the middle of downtown, and a 19th-century whaling ship sits just up the bank. It's the kind of place where the best plan is a slow walk and an ice cream.
This guide covers the best things to do in Mystic, CT, for anyone driving up from New Jersey or riding the train from New York. It covers the big two, Mystic Seaport Museum and Mystic Aquarium, then the little downtown, then the quieter places nearby, from a nature center to a cider mill and Stonington Borough down the coast.
Mystic isn't actually a town. It's a village split by the Mystic River between the towns of Groton and Stonington. The state tourism site says it dates to 1654 and was a shipbuilding center in the clipper-ship era. That history is everywhere you look.
How I picked these
I checked every place on its own website or an official tourism page in November 2026, and left out anything I couldn't confirm is running. You'll find a mix of big attractions and small stops, plus a few seasonal ones. I don't list hours or prices, which change by season, so check each link before you go.

If you do one thing in Mystic, make it this. Mystic Seaport Museum is a recreated 19th-century maritime village on the river. Its centerpiece is the Charles W. Morgan, built and launched in 1841. The museum calls it the last of an American whaling fleet that once numbered more than 2,700 ships. It's also America's oldest commercial ship still afloat, older than any but USS Constitution.
The Morgan arrived in Mystic on November 8, 1941. In 2014 it went down the river and under the bascule bridge for its 38th voyage.
Don't skip the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard. The museum says it was the first shipyard in the country built specifically for preservation, and you can watch the shipwrights at work. There are casual places to eat on the grounds and a museum store.
Parking is free for museum visitors, in lots across the street from each entrance on Route 27. The North Entrance is open all year. The South Entrance, by the tugboat Kingston II, closes in winter. In December, the museum's holiday event, Lantern Lights: A Mystic Holiday, runs December 3–6, 10–13 and 17–23, 2026, with timed entry, caroling, carriage rides and performances.
Downtown Mystic
The Mystic River Bascule Bridge
Mystic River Bascule Bridge

U.S. Route 1 (Main Street) over the Mystic River, Mystic, CT 06355
Checked against official sources Nov 2026
The bridge is the heart of downtown. It carries U.S. Route 1 across the river and lifts to let boats through. The Boston Globe called it 100 years old in 2022 and said it normally opens about 2,200 times a year, at 40 minutes past the hour.
A note for 2026: since August 20, the state Department of Transportation has limited openings "until further notice" while the bridge's mechanical and electrical systems are repaired. For now it opens for boats at 7:40 a.m., 11:40 a.m., 2:40 p.m. and 6:40 p.m. If you want to see the lift, plan around those times and check the DOT's advisory first.

The pizzeria still calls itself "the pizza that made the movie famous." It's on West Main Street, a short walk from the bridge, and it takes online orders. Fans of the film will want the photo out front, and it's a practical lunch stop between the river and the museum.

It opens every September 1, and the state tourism site says it runs through December. You'll find sweet cider, cider donuts, hard ciders and apple wines made on site, plus cider-making demonstrations. In fall, it's one of the coziest things to do in Mystic.

Its best-known stop is the Old Lighthouse Museum. The lighthouse was built in 1840, stopped working in 1889, and opened in 1927 as the nation's first lighthouse museum. Note that it's closed for renovations from October 2026 until May 2027, when it reopens with a new ramp, deck and entrance. There's an 18-story observation tower, a café and gardens.
It's open Wednesday through Saturday, so plan a midweek or Saturday visit. It's a thoughtful counterweight to the maritime history in town, telling the story of the people who lived here long before the shipyards.
Getting to Mystic from New Jersey
- By car: Take I-95 north through New York and along the Connecticut coast. For the aquarium, Olde Mistick Village and the Seaport Museum, use Exit 90 for Route 27. The museum says it's about a mile south of the exit.
- By train: Amtrak's Northeast Regional stops at Mystic station, 2 Roosevelt Avenue, from New Jersey stations including Trenton, Metropark, Newark Airport and Newark Penn. It's a short walk from downtown, and the Seaport's directions page mentions the Mystic Seaport Express boat between downtown and the museum.
- Parking downtown: The Greater Mystic Chamber lists several lots, including at the Mystic Museum of Art on Water Street, Seaport Marine on Washington Street and two churches. In residential streets, obey the posted signs.
When to go
Summer is busiest, with the Mystic Outdoor Art Festival along the river each August. Fall brings cider season at Clyde's and fewer crowds, and the shoreline is among the last places in Connecticut to turn. See our Connecticut fall foliage guide for the hills. In winter, Santa arrives by tugboat on November 28, 2026, followed by a tree lighting at Mystic River Park and a lighted boat parade, and the Seaport's Lantern Lights runs in December.
If you love a historic seaport town, Mystic pairs beautifully with things to do in Cape May back in New Jersey. For more overnight ideas, see our weekend getaways from NYC and NJ weekend getaways.
